There are certain things in life that are passed down from generation to generation: heirloom China, photo albums, saying “Don’t make me turn this car around”, and knowing how to fold a fitted sheet. It wasn’t until I was already in my 20’s that I was watching my grandmother fold clean bedding and I realized that I had been doing it all wrong. I asked her to back up so I could watch from the beginning and this is what she taught me.
step 1
Stand holding the corners at each end of one of the long sides of your sheet. With the sheet inside, out put one hand in each corner. Bring your hands together and fold the corner in your left hand over the corner in your right (the first photo shows how the sheets will be lined up once one corner is inside the other).
step 2
Next, lie the first set of folded corners down and do the same with the other two corners.
step 3
Insert your hands into the two new corners (each is a set of two single corners) and stretch your hands apart to make sure the sheet isn’t tangled. Bring your hands together like you did in step 1 and fold the left over the right again. You will end up with all four corners inside one another, as pictured.
step 4
Lay the folded sheet on a flat surface and straighten it so that it is as close to a square as you can get it. You’ll know you’re on the right track if you see both elastic edges forming a half circle in one corner.
step 5-6
Fold the sheet in thirds starting with the messiest side first, followed by the clean side.
step 7-8
Fold the sheet in thirds again, starting with the messy end, effectively hiding it inside a nicely folded square.
*Another trick that I’ve stumbled upon: Take a matching folded fitted sheet, top sheet, and one pillow case and put them inside the second pillow case in a neat stack – this will ensure that you always have a matching set when it comes time to change your bedding.
